NAME: Mrs. Brisby
AGE: Like... 2 years old? She's an adult field mouse.
CANON: The Secret of N.I.M.H. (I am not including anything from the sequel)
CANON HISTORY: Link!
CANON PERSONALITY: Mrs. Brisby is a simple field mouse struggling to comprehend the impossible and the tragic in her life, driven entirely by her love for her children. Losing her husband has left her with the sole burden of trying to raise her four children, including Timothy, who is afflicted with pneumonia. With no easy way to protect her family home from the farmer's plow without risking Timothy's life, she has to step outside of her breadth of knowledge and her comfort zones.
She is, after all, a very timid and frightful mouse. Fear of the farmer, of cats, of snakes, owls, and spiders... there is a lot in the field that is dangerous and her fears are quite plentiful. Even a fear of heights often paralyzes her. However, throughout her journey, she constantly has to conquer those fears in order to do what needs to be done. Her fear is an obstacle, but her devout love for her children is the key to whether or not she can find her courage. Because despite her worries and anxieties, Mrs. Brisby has a rare and powerful bravery - a bravery that is made manifest at the end of the film by the red stone pendant that Jonathan had left behind for her.
Though fear and courage are her two most defining traits, she is also notably a gentle and kind woman, especially to her children. She has a deep fondness for her family and is very polite and considerate to neighbors or to those she may be imposing on, and typically is more apprehensive about causing a scene with people. However, for the sake of her family or for doing what's right, she will absolutely stand up and assert herself, imploring for those around her to listen or to help. She also may prefer politeness, but she will often rather passive aggressively deride people who are oblivious or who are causing her a bit of trouble as well, even if she may never say a foul thing to their faces.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: She doesn't have any aside from "being a mouse".

PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: She is a human, instead of a field mouse!
AU NAME: Mrs. Elizabeth Brisby
AU AGE: 38
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: She is a human, instead of a field mouse!
AU HISTORY:
➵ Elizabeth was born and raised in a very small farm town. She was never very literate, didn't go to a very good school, and ended up dropping out of high school in order to help her family around the farm during her teenage years.
➵ She met Jonathan Brisby when she was 18, nearly 19, and was smitten nearly immediately. He was about four years older than she was, but he was charmed by her kindness and demeanor. They moved to a city neighboring Recolle, got married, and soon Mrs. Brisby was pregnant with her first child (intended to be Kamui
foeyay)
➵ She had a number of other children with him (currently intended to be Jay
sweetjoker and Katsuki
eruptive), working diligently as a stay-at-home mom for some very rowdy kids.
➵ Jonathan Brisby dies in a car accident, leaving Elizabeth to raise her children alone. Kamui, her oldest, is only 8.
➵ She does her best to raise her kids through her grief and in spite of their temperaments.
➵ When Kamui is 9, he gets pneumonia. After only a year of living in the home she made with her husband, Mrs. Brisby realizes that she's far too isolated, with no relatives or friends that can help her. Desperate for help, she ends up contacting some of Jonathan's friends still living in Recolle.
➵ Jonathan's friends, intending on helping their old friend by helping his family, help Mrs. Brisby move her family to a new home in Recolle and help her pay for Kamui's medical bills. They are the ones that help enable her to stay home and tend to her children day and night, desperate to not lose her son to the sickness.
➵ Kamui recovers, and Jonathan's friends help Mrs. Brisby one last time by helping her find a job in Recolle. She gets a job working in the local farmer's market, working with several different farmers to help them manage and sell their goods.
➵ Mrs. Brisby has been living in Recolle since then, doing her best to raise her kids and keep them healthy. She's a fixture of the community, consistently getting involved and helping out where she can.
AU PERSONALITY: Her personality won't divulge too terribly much from canon! The primary difference is that the Brisby from Recolle is quite a bit older, and has older children. She is a bit more world-weary, a little more prone to being sassy or passive aggressive thanks to living in a more level and undramatic live, and generally less anxious. The incident of pneumonia is not a fresh fear, but a deep-seated one, the fright of losing her children something that pops up from time to time in the occasional nightmare rather than a crisis she has to live in the moment. Her children are also much more foul-tempered and/or misbehaved than her canon children ever were, and as a result she has a much higher tolerance for mischief than even the average single mother does. She often has little sympathy for other parents complaining about their kids unless the children they're complaining about are just as rowdy or worse than any of her children were.

REVISIONS
Though her loyalty and devotion is reserved for her family, she is far from cold and callous to others around her. She is highly empathetic, willing to listen to their problems and more diligent than one might expect in keeping them in mind. Though she has her frustrations with grouchy people like Auntie Shrew, or annoyances with putzes like Jeremy the crow, she is always able to see things from their perspective ("The shrew means well") and is generally very encouraging even through her annoyance (as proven by her encouragement to Jeremy about finding that "miss right"). When her patience runs a bit thin on more pushy individuals (again, Jeremy being the sole canon example) she tends to prefer hinting that she needs to leave or giving the person a task as opposed to flat out telling them to go away or that they're being obnoxious. She may even attempt to sweet-talk them and appeal to their ego to get them to leave her to her tasks, but this seems to be something reserved for someone as pushy as Jeremy as she doesn't do it to anyone else.
One very strong example of her being willing to help those outside her family are her efforts to repay the Rats of N.I.M.H. once they agree to help her move her home as a favor to Jonathan. Though the rats are more than willing to help her after an initial wariness, and ask nothing of her in return, Mrs. Brisby still turns and offers help in drugging the farmer's cat Dragon despite that very same cat being the one that killed her husband. She could have easily gone home herself to reassure her children and guide them through the moving process, but she wanted to help them as they were helping her. She also listened and took to heart their struggles with the organization N.I.M.H. and, when she heard that N.I.M.H. was coming to try and catch the rats again her first thought was to escape and hurry to find them to warn them.
In this way, it's clear that she's able to befriend those around her, even if she has few opportunities to do so within the timeframe of the movie. She is very emotional and empathetic, and though she does her best to help her family, she will often turn back and try to help other people as well, unable to really see someone suffering or in danger. Though she views herself as very frightful, helpless, and cowardly, the people around her often benefit from her ability to shove her fear down and step forward to help them. Nicodemus, the leader of the rats, comments to her about her great bravery and has faith enough in her good nature to entrust the magical stone that Jonathan had for her. Despite the stone potentially bringing ruin were it to fall in the wrong hands, it's an indication about her nature by the wisest rat within the rose bush that he gave it to her anyway.
AU Connections! Most of the plotting has been done in private plurks (and currently a discord server I made for the four of us), but there's proof on dreamwidth of some of our plans on Brisby's AU Workshop thread! Kamui has also submitted their app recently and you will likely find that it's connected with Brisby's history. If you need me to make another private plurk with all four of us + the mod plurk I can do something like that.
Additions to the Timeline
➵ Growing up on her parents' farm, Elizabeth was expected to work with her parents in the field first and foremost. It taught her how to raise crops and chickens, but the juggling of farm work and school work was a constant struggle in her life. It's difficult to find time for both in the day, especially when she wanted to relax after working as well.
➵ As a result, she always did rather poorly in school and rarely did her homework, even if she always did her classwork and behaved as well as she could. She experienced some bullying as a result of being so slow, but also had plenty of friends who gave her the rare opportunity to just enjoy herself instead of constantly working.
➵ Though her parents wanted her working, they were not unfair or unkind people - she just couldn't deal with the juggling any longer, especially as her parents were somewhat workaholics and they felt like time not worked was time wasted. She chose to drop out of high school to work on the farm, at first.
➵ After a year of farm work, she changed her mind, wanting to move away from farm work and back into an environment that would allow her to have time to herself.
Elizabeth found a job in an office as a receptionist after a lot of digging. It wasn't at work that she met Jonathan, but at the bus stop they happened to share at the time - after a few pleasant conversations, they started spending time together, and got together more officially even sooner after. Jonathan was several years her senior, but was one of the few people that respected her despite her age and the fact that she dropped out.
➵ They were not living in Recolle, but in an unnamed nearby city. They were living there for Jonathan's work, and as he became more successful and made connections with his friends (the parallel to the rats) Elizabeth could focus on being a full-time mother.
➵ The time after his death was a whirlwind event, where she relied very heavily on his life insurance in the time she was desperately seeking out a way to provide for her kids.
➵ During this time, Jonathan's friends met his widow at the funeral, and after hearing about her situation, contributed what they could to help the family. One suggested moving into Recolle, where most of them were already situated and could help her find a job. An older gentleman made sure that the pneumonia Kamui had wouldn't be untreated (basically the Mr. Ages parallel). Many of them pitched in for that brief timeframe, and once the Brisby family was moved and settled, Elizabeth did her best to become a part of their lives in any way she could. This usually manifests as attending birthdays, spending time with them, and any time they ask for help she will go and do her best at whatever they need.
➵ After the very chaotic winter where she got settled into Recolle, she settled into her new job and became as active as she could with her children at their new school. Her kids are (as of now) all problematic children, after all, so she has a very close association with a lot of other parents and with a lot of the teachers... and despite her good demeanor, bad blood often brews from upset parents. So she has her mix of rivalries with other mothers, as well as a few friendships.
➵ As her kids get older and more independent, she's been able to relax a bit and focus on herself a bit more. This usually means that she's out talking and gossiping with neighbors, enjoying a movie or two, maybe fussing with redecorating her house...
➵ At the bottom of her list of things to do is become a bit more literate. She can read, especially after her time as a receptionist, but her own children are so smart she feels a bit guilty about never taking her own education more seriously.
Hopefully that will all suffice!
